Active Shooter Seminar

The Alaska Hospital & Healthcare Association (AHHA) is partnering with HSS to offer all AHHA member facilities a one-hour active shooter virtual seminar designed specifically for healthcare workers, including medical staff, professional support staff, and volunteers, who may encounter potentially dangerous individuals.

Unlike generic programs, this program is focused exclusively on situations healthcare workers are likely to encounter.

Learning Concepts:

• Compare/contrast the nature of violence in varying settings.
• Discuss the progression of preparatory activities along a pathway to violence.
• Discuss the various warning signs an individual may exhibit during the planning phase.
• Learn effective response techniques in an active threat to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
• Understand how a facility can maintain critical operations during an extended response to an active threat.
• Learn how to facilitate coordination and communication with community partners during an active threat.

This training is made possible with funding from the Alaska State Hospital Preparedness Program grant.

About the Speaker

Steve Weiler currently leads the Active Shooter/Threat and Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (TEAM®) programs, conducts security risk assessments, designs/delivers HSEEP compliant exercises, and advises clients on business continuity for HSS, Inc.

Prior to working with HSS, Steve spent over 28 years as a law enforcement professional. Steve was integral in coordinating his organization’s response to the 9/11 terror attacks and H1N1, preparation for NATO 2012, and numerous regional incident management activities. In addition, Steve served on a Cook County’s Community Health Advisory Council, led a multi-jurisdictional public health prophylaxis dispensing program, was a member of a multi-jurisdictional task force preparing communities for active shooter incidents, and trained thousands of public and private sector personnel on the Incident Command System.

Steve received his M.S. in Criminal/Social Justice Administration from Lewis University and completed the Administrative Officers Course through the Southern Police Institute. He served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Kaplan University.
