2026 Beacon Award: Alaska Department of Health

As Alaska prepares to transition to a new administration, we reflect on the exceptional dedication from the Alaska Department of Health (DOH).

Since 2020, the team at DOH has shown us all what true public service looks like. Facing some of the most complex, demanding challenges in our state's history, this team met every single obstacle with extraordinary leadership and heart.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department was right there on the front lines—managing unprecedented logistics across Alaska’s vast terrain to help our communities and healthcare delivery system. The DOH was instrumental in securing critical resources for the state's healthcare system, enabling emergency guidance and liability protections, and centralizing data collection (including PPE supply, testing capacity, and staffing levels) to reduce the reporting burden on hospitals and enable real-time information exchange.

But as we all know, the heavy lifting didn't stop when the emergency faded. DOH has worked tirelessly through immense operational hurdles—navigating the massive post-pandemic Medicaid eligibility unwinding and tackling tough challenges to deliver SNAP benefits to families in need. And now, looking toward the future, the Department is leading the charge on a monumental $272 million Rural Health Transformation Program while preparing for several federal overhauls to hit the Medicaid program in 2027 and beyond.

For these reasons, the Alaska Hospital & Healthcare Association is proud to bestow the 2026 Beacon Award to the leadership, staff, and dedicated public servants at the Alaska Department of Health.
