About the Event

American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Transitions in Practice

This online training program with a learning cohort will improve job satisfaction and fundamental psychiatric-mental health nursing knowledge of RNs.

The course includes 16 CE hours and four online classes facilitated by a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with many years of experience in behavioral health nursing intended to support the learning following each module and allow participating nurses an opportunity to ask questions, share experiences, and connect with other nurses taking the course.

Please note that you must complete registration by April 1 to participate.

About the Training:

This continuing education course is intended for new RN graduates and RNs transitioning to inpatient psychiatric practice settings. It consists of four modules (16 hours of content) covering foundational aspects of psychiatric-mental health nursing practice including mental health and substance abuse presented by recognized experts in the field. Focusing on the most up-to-date best practices and evidence-based nursing knowledge. The course will optimize success in nursing practice and improve healthcare outcomes for persons with mental health disorders.

This course will be delivered virtually and supplemented with a cohort model consisting of four Zoom sessions led by subject matter expert, Gerry Martone, PANP. The cohort sessions are designed for participants to have a support network to ask questions, learn from each other’s experiences, and ensure timely completion of the course by August 20.

The cohort meetings are scheduled to follow each module:

Module 1 – Anxiety, depressive, bipolar, and psychotic disorders, medication management,

Cohort meeting#1 - April 10th 3:30-4:30 PM AKST

Module 2 – Mental status exam, risk assessments, substance use disorders, medical co-morbidities

Cohort meeting #2- May 8th, 3:30-4:30 PM AKST

Module 3 – Recovery oriented interventions, cultural awareness, trauma & recovery, PTSD

Cohort meeting #3 - June 12th, 3:30-4:30 PM AKST

Module 4 – Professional boundaries, therapeutic engagement in de-escalation, safe environments

Cohort meeting #4 - July 10th, 3:30-4:30 PM AKST

This training is offered at no cost for AHHA member facilities. There are 29 available seats, with the possibility of another cohort this fall or in 2025 depending on interest. Registration assumes course completion and participation in Zoom sessions. If you are unable to commit to completing the course by August 20, 2024, we suggest completing the registration but putting your name on the interest list to be included in information about a future cohort.
