2026 Golden Stethoscope Award: Dr. Kendrick Blais

For more than three decades, Dr. Kendrick Blais has been a cornerstone of the Fairbanks community, serving generations of families with unwavering integrity and compassion. His commitment to continuous improvement has helped advance initiatives focused on reducing avoidable hospitalizations, improving care coordination, and enhancing resident outcomes. From routine office visits to the complexities of end-of-life care, Dr. Blais has walked alongside countless Alaskans, his career defined by a rare combination of clinical excellence and profound servant leadership.

Dr. Blais’ dedication is perhaps best illustrated by his commitment to the most vulnerable. While many providers scaled back services due to reimbursement challenges, Dr. Blais stepped forward, ensuring that Medicare and veteran patients at his practice, Polar Wind Medical Center, continued to receive high-quality care. When the Denali Center faced a vacancy in its Medical Director role, he again answered the call, ensuring that elders continued to receive exceptional, uninterrupted care. Today, in his role as Medical Director for Foundation Health Partners’ Hospice, Home Health, and Denali Center, he continues to advocate for the Interior’s most fragile residents.

Dr. Blais has played an important role in advancing quality and patient safety at Denali Center. Under his medical leadership, the organization earned the AHCA Silver Quality Award and is currently pursuing the prestigious AHCA Gold Quality Award. Recognizing that unnecessary hospital readmissions often stem from fragmented care and communication gaps, Dr. Blais spearheaded a multidisciplinary initiative to improve patient safety. He has led efforts to strengthen collaboration between physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and nursing staff to improve clinical decision-making and medication management. He championed peer learning among admitting providers, supported detailed reviews of resident transfers to identify preventable factors, and promoted a culture of continuous learning focused on keeping residents safe and ensuring care occurs in the most appropriate setting.

These initiatives have yielded measurable results: the Denali Center consistently performs well below national benchmarks for emergency department visits, antipsychotic medication use, and hospital readmissions. Beyond the metrics, these successes represent a tangible improvement in the quality of life and safety for the residents entrusted to his care.

For over 35 years, Dr. Blais has balanced clinical mastery with a deep-seated commitment to service. His leadership has strengthened the healthcare landscape for seniors, veterans, and hospice patients throughout Interior Alaska. Through his relentless focus on patient safety, quality improvement, and compassionate advocacy, Dr. Blais exemplifies the highest ideals of the medical profession and is a most deserving recipient of this year’s Golden Stethoscope Award.
